Guys this should be a reaaly good seminar series with SBG President and BJJ Black belt Matt Thornton.

I have been to all of Matt's Dublin seminars and I have always found them to be excellent.

Matt is a very charismatic speaker on BJJ although his style of teaching is highly functional and I have often found that the material he teaches is usually straightforward and easy to apply.

A lot of the training and coaching methods that that we employ at QUB Revolution team are stolen from him...

Saturday, March 6th

12-2pm & 3-5pm

This will concentrate on the fundamentals of real fighting. The latest developments in Stand-up and Clinch will be taught plus escapes from pins and submissions will also be covered. All beginners should make big effort to attend this! This will be ‘No-Gi’

Sunday, March 7th

12-2pm & 3-5pm

Matt will be coaching some new BJJ positional drills they have been working on in Portland. This seminar will help elevate your grappling game to a new level. You will need a Gi for this day. There will also be a belt testing on during the 12-2pm section.

Cost: 2 days booked before Friday, 26th February – €80 or €50 per day.
Cost: 2 days booked after Friday, 26th February – €100 or €60 per day.
Both days plus belt testing – €100

Where do you actually sign up for this? I get paid on the 24th so I can book before the 26th deadline still.

Greatr stuff indeed!

As an aide memoire I thought I would quickly list what was covered: I will try and cover this in class over the next few weeks.

Saturday

1. Finding base on your feet
2. Basic footwork, circling away from power side
3. Avoiding the shot by cutting an angle
4. Correct frames and postures for the underhook (elbow tight)
5. Basic kneeblock from single sided underhook.
6. Nearside single from single underhook
7. 10 finger guillotine- elbows tight, chin on the spine
8. Classic guillotine
9. Defence to classic guillotine
10 'Cowcatcher' combination for when guillotine is countered
11. Cow catcher from the knees.
12. Callouts "ear" "run" "clinch" "underhook" "knee block" "Guillotine" amd "single"
13 Pinch Headlock
14 'toilet flush' takedown from pinch headlock.
15. Guard pull from pinch headlock/flying triangle
16 Pinch headlock from butterfly guard.
basics of the guard- disrupt the base and posture all the time.
for pinch headlock from closed guard: put foot on hip, then use this space for butterfly hook
17 Head and arm choke/butterfly sweep from pinch headlock
18 Cutting armbar from pinch headlock/butterfly guard
19 Triangle from pinch headlock (feet on hips)

Sunday (this is where the guys who were there can chip in)

Back escapes
1. Seal drill (emphasis on keeping elbows tight and level change)
2. Seal drill from back with hooks
3. The Scoop (reference Saulo's book). Detail - get elbows inside opponenets legs at the start
4. Releasing hook from scoop (drive elbow to mat straighten leg to force hook off hip. Crucially bring knee back to chest to prevent hook going back on hip)
5. Escape from scoop position. Hip escape towads freed leg and go to hands and knees. Very important to ensure elbows are tight to prevent opponenet from driving hooks in again.
6. Classic back escape. When harnassed/seat belted make sure you trap arm that is underhooking. Put you back on the mat raising near leg (I know what all this means- don't worry, I'll show you lot)
7. Bodylock escape. Put the sole of opponents horizontal leg on the mat- then either do classic escape or footlock.
